ATLANTA, GA — Oct 2, 2025 — At the COLLIDE Data + AI 2025 conference, KMS Technology’s Chief Technology Officer, Guy Merritt, presented a strategic framework for enterprises to transition from AI exploration to full-scale adoption.
The session, titled “The AI Maturity Journey: Guiding Enterprises from Exploration to Excellence,” addressed the critical challenge of turning AI hype into measurable business results.
The COLLIDE Data+ AI conference brought together industry leaders and technical experts to discuss the path to enterprise-wide AI implementation. While the benefits of AI are well-known, many organizations face significant barriers, including legacy system integration, internal skill gaps, and a lack of robust governance. Merritt’s presentation provided a structured, five-step approach to overcome these hurdles and achieve AI maturity.
“The most crucial step in any AI initiative is to define the business outcome you want to achieve before you select a technology,” stated Merritt. “Don’t be a solution searching for a problem. Start by identifying real pain points within your existing workflows.”
Merritt outlined a clear roadmap for business leaders to ensure AI investments deliver tangible value. The key takeaways from his session include:
- Define Business Outcomes First: Begin by identifying specific business pain points and setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals. This aligns AI projects with strategic objectives from the start.
- Establish Robust Governance: Merritt emphasized that data and AI governance is a “boring but VERY important” foundation for building scalable and trustworthy AI. He recommended forming a cross-functional council and implementing established standards like the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
- Conduct an AI Maturity Assessment: Before prescribing a solution, organizations must diagnose their readiness. An assessment identifies gaps across people, processes, and technology, providing a prioritized roadmap for investment and effort.
- Use a Phased Implementation Framework: A four-phase approach—Ideation, Validation, Build, and Run at Scale—allows companies to test ideas, build prototypes, and scale solutions with confidence, minimizing risk and ensuring value.
- Empower Cross-Functional “AI Squads”: Merritt stressed that “AI is a team sport.” He introduced the concept of dedicated “AI Squads,” composed of business analysts, AI specialists, and project managers, to drive initiatives and build internal centers of excellence.
The message from COLLIDE 2025 was that the era of AI experimentation is shifting to one of strategic, structured implementation. Those who are faster to implement will gain a significant edge in the market.
Merritt’s framework offers a powerful guide for organizations seeking to harness AI’s full potential and build a sustainable competitive advantage.
